Many people search for a cybersecurity company after fraud, impersonation, data misuse, online threats, or suspicious digital behaviour. Sometimes cybersecurity is exactly what they need. In other cases, the better fit is a digital investigation agency that can trace people, accounts, assets, fraud infrastructure, and evidence.
Cybersecurity and investigation are different
Cybersecurity companies often focus on protecting systems: penetration testing, monitoring, incident response, malware, access control, and technical risk. Digital investigation focuses on answering factual questions: who is involved, what happened, what can be documented, and what evidence supports the next step.
A simple rule of thumb: if your question is about systems (“is my network safe, is this device infected”), you need cybersecurity. If your question is about people and facts (“who did this, what happened, what can I prove”), you need investigation. Many real incidents contain both questions, in that order.
Four common scenarios, mapped
- Your email was compromised and used for invoice fraud: first secure the account and check the device (security), then trace where the money went and who was behind it (investigation).
- You or your company were scammed by a counterparty: no systems were breached; this is an investigation question from the start.
- An employee or ex-partner is harassing you anonymously online: attribution and evidence: investigation. If devices may be monitored, add a technical check.
- Ransomware: containment and recovery are security work; tracing the payment and documenting the incident for insurers or authorities is investigation work.
When OSINT may be the right fit
- You need to identify the person behind an account.
- You need evidence about an online scam or fraud scheme.
- You need background checks or due diligence.
- You need asset tracing or recovery support information.
- You need social media or public-source evidence for a claim or dispute.
When cybersecurity may be the right fit
- Your systems may be compromised.
- You need malware analysis or technical incident response.
- You need network security testing.
- You need security monitoring or infrastructure hardening.
How NCRB fits
NCRB is an investigative intelligence agency. We focus on OSINT, digital investigation, person tracing, fraud investigation, asset tracing, insurance investigation, and evidence reporting. Where a matter requires technical cybersecurity response, we can help clarify the investigative side and coordinate with appropriate specialists where needed.
One practical difference worth knowing: investigation work in the Netherlands is regulated. Anyone who professionally traces people and documents evidence about individuals on behalf of others needs a licence as a private investigation agency (NCRB is registered under POB 1737). Such an agency works under privacy law and produces reporting designed to be usable in claims, disputes, or proceedings. A technically excellent security firm is not automatically equipped, or licensed, for that side of an incident.
